The Stockholm League - December 11 2013 and final result

Congrats Randy to yet another league victory! This time he scored five game wins in fourteen games, using Tzimisce vote, Unnamed stealth-bleed, Lutz & Unmada vote and Nosferatu royalty vote with Giotto Verducci (twice). Randy likes to vote and he loves his stealth!

The Stockholm League - November 27 2013

Three tables were played in the eight round of ten in our October–December league. Standard tournament rules apply + printed proxy is allowed.

Randy takes the lead in the league by sweeping table 3. He played it cool with his Tzimisce vote deck (including the Danse Macabre-cards Public Vilification and Xipe Totec), and picked up the pieces after Tomas had Taken the Skin of two Lasombra decks, leaving Ivan in a weird lost position.

Ashur´s EC experience 2013 part 3: FCQ

I was a bit tired after playing two days and thought that I would be nice to qualify for next years EC now, not having to think about that bit for a whole year. Also, with the new rules for qualifying, 1 game win would be enough. So I took my old Kindred Spirits deck again, the same deck I used at the LCQ. A somewhat boring deck, I agree, but my mood was not on top this morning, so it had to do.

If I recall correctly, the only change I made was switching the extra Uncle George for a extra Midget. Midget rocks!

As in my earlier reports from the EC, the arrows in the graphics below shows the general amount of pressure a Methuselah put on his or her prey – yellow is “not much”, orange is “some” and red is “a lot”.

Table 1:

Difficulty for me: 3/5. Looked kind of nice, with two soft target in front of me and the Warghouls crosstable. Thought I´d get at least 2 vps here. But nooooo.
My performance: 2/5. Had the worst crypt draw with only 1 vamp with superior Dementation. Didn´t draw enough Kindred Spirits either.
The other players: Jonas (obf-bleed with black hand tech) put hard pressure on Carlo at once, forcing him to go backwards. Carlo made some deal with Tomas, not to rush him and not to block his Governs. So of course Tomas won this. Robert was too crippled by me (sorry Robert) to be able to do anything constructive, apart from some Sensory Deps on Tomas when they didn´t matter.
Lesson to learn: The Kindred Spirits deck is a real one-trick pony. When it fizzles you don´t have much leverage to use to get help.

Tomas: 4 vp
Jonas: 1 vp

Table 2:

Difficulty for me: 4/5. Bleeding on Nana & ani-weenies is never easy.
My performance: 2/5. The whole table ganged up against the Nana player here, so even though I was rushed a lot I should have been able to oust him. But he played well and balanced the table.
The other players: Brian regreted he didn´t Amaranth his predators first minion (Fish) when he had the opportunity early on. Later he tried to mastermind our defense against Nana, but it didn´t work out. Christofer misunderstood a deal we had at one time (Swede-to-Swede in English!), it might have worked otherwise.
Lesson to learn: Hate Nana and her ugly Tablets! Not even the whole table working together could stop here. I still don´t understand what kind of playtesting Ashur Tablets went through.

Nana-player: 3 vp
Christofer: 1 vp

Table 3:

Difficulty for me: 1/5. Looked totally winable. Then Maris Steck turned up.
My performance: 3/5. The deck did it´s thing and I didn´t mess stuff up. But it wasn´t enough.
The other players: I think Danilo played the same deck as he played in the finals of Nations Cup two days earlier, but this time Huitzilopoctli didn´t show up. Emiliano must have used 8+ blood on his Maris to prevent me from ousting him, but I did eventually. Jussi played a group 4-5 midcap crypt, so we didn´t contest. He played larger vamps, with AUS for bounce, which served him well. Jonas played the same deck as at table 1 of course, putting a lot of pressure on Emiliano, who played some kind of Maris+Lutz Derange deck – really no fun for me because of Maris ability and him stealing my Tony with Malkavian Dementia and Villeining him for 6.
Lesson to learn: Never leave home without a Fear of Mekhet. Otherwise not much. A fun table with no Nana, no Aus-weenie and no Warghouls :)

Me: 1 vp
Jussi: 4 vp

The EC was won by Hugh Angseesing, congrats! You can read a transcript of the finals here.

I´ve had a little dip in my interest of Vtes the last six months or so, and that made it´s mark this weekend. I hope Danse Macabre makes the game more fun for me now, so that I will be more excited for tournament play in 2014!

Ashur´s EC experience 2013 part 2: EC day 1

As you might have read earlier, I manage to qualify for this tournament just the day before, at the LCQ. Time to choose deck, and as usual in this moment, pride goes before intelligence. I want to play something original. Or at least kind of original. So this time I went with my Kiasyd combat-toolbox with Earth Swords, a deck that works okey and I have played quite a lot. I know. A stupid choice.

Based on a deck by Martin Randers.

The arrows in the graphics below shows the general amount of pressure a Methuselah put on his or her prey – yellow is “not much”, orange is “some” and red is “a lot”.

Table 1:

Difficulty for me: 3/5. A rather open history. Could have worked.
My performance: 2/5. I had no idea what Jukka and Gabriele played until late in the game – both decks looked like some kind of toolbox – and that made it difficult for me to make the right choice in some important situations early on.
The other players: Gabriele died rather early to Aleksi bleeds – a deck like that cannot be allowed to have more than 2 minions, but neither Jukka nor Gabriele had means to stop him. Marko of course is a very good player, calm and smart even under hard pressure, but I almost ousted him because of my intercept. I didn´t learn until the last couple of turns or so what Jukka played, it was some kind of wall deck with sticks and breed and Palla Grande.
Lesson to learn: Knowledge is power. Reading the table and knowing deck archetypes is very important. Also: The Kiasyd group 4-5 crypt is very popular.

Marko: 1,5
Jukka: 1,5
Aleksi: 1
Me: 0,5

Table 2:

Difficulty for me: 2/5. This was totally winable, especially after I smacked my predators first minion into torpor and was able to Govern down. But … shit happens.
My performance: 3/5. I played pretty good here, in my humble opinion. My deck is not fast enough though.
The other players: All played fairly well. Apart from me hurting my predator a lot everybody did pretty much what was expected of them. Daniel is a rather new player, but he won his other two games and got to the finals.
Lesson to learn: Not a new lesson at all, but a reminder: Never listen to the Aus-weenie player. Just f**k him/her up and let him/her manage with one minion is he/she has a non-aggressive predator, or two minions if he/she has a aggressive predator. Also: The Kiasyd group 4-5 crypt is very popular.

Me: 1,5 vp
Pau: 0,5 vp
Csaba: 0,5 vp
Daniel: 0,5 vp

Table 3:

Difficulty for me: 2/5. I thought I could smash the Imbued, and I thought I could handle my predators weenies. I also thought my combat could trump the stickmen´s.

My performance: 2/5. Although I survived the 1-cap swarm (a very, very, very stupid deck), and although I burned one or two of my preys Imbueds, it didn´t work out. The stickmen-decks did contest a bit, but Hugh had no pressure from his predator at all, so he won this and played the final, and later won the whole championship.
The other players: Hughs and Markos decks was similar. The Imbued deck was weird, with Lock and other stuff instead of the usual tech I´m used to (no Gehenna, no Talbot´s chainsaw). The weenie deck as incredably strange – just 1-caps and Thin-blooded Seers with Computer Hackings and Leverage, no tech at all. A deck that, in my book, only should be able to take 1 vp – ie, destroy the game for one player and unbalance the table, nothing more.
Lesson to learn: I took a lot of resources to defend myself, I might have cycled a bit too much there, as I didn´t have a deck left when my predator and Marko was gone.

Hugh: 4 vp
Marko: 1 vp

The finals of day 1 was won by Martin Weinmayer.

No day 2 for me. Stay tuned for my FCQ report.

Ashur´s EC experience 2013 part 1: LCQ

Hi. Lots and lots and lots of people have begged me to write something about my EC experience this year. I will, but it will be in a short and strict format. The arrows on the table graphics shows the amount of pressure a Methuselah put on his or her prey – yellow is “not much”, orange is “some” and red is “a lot”.

First: Last Chance Qualifier 2013, Stockholm, Sweden.

In spite the EC was in my hometown this year, I felt really uninspired. I wasn´t qualified, so I felt like playing a easy deck that could take at least 1 game win. I also had been in the finals with a Kindred Spirits deck just one week before this, so I took that deck. Yes, it has no bounce. And yes, that extra Uncle George should have been a extra Persia instead.

CRYPT:

1 x Persia, the Beautiful Statue (5)
2 x Uncle George (5)

Table 1:

Difficulty for me: 1/5. This pretty much fell into my lap.
My performance: 4/5. Can´t complain, although it was more about luck than skill. I had no deck and just a few minutes left when it ended though.
The other players: Sergio play this very slow, I´m not sure what his plan was. Elisabet is a new player, she just bled full throttle, making some beginner mistakes in timing and defense. Donk was totally owned. I thought Peter was able to stop me, but he had a bad draw with no wakes when he needed them.
Lesson to learn: Not really.

Me: 5 vp

Table 2:

Difficulty for me: 4/5
My performance: 2/5. I was a dead fish from start here, but Ober is a master of the noble art of overextending, so I actually had a chance for a while, when he took one of my deals.
The other players: Ober had this game in his pocket from get go. Andreas had it very difficult here, he didn´t have much defense and Ober let Kalle bled him out.
Lesson to learn:

Ober: 3 vp
Kalle: 2 vp

Table 3:

Difficulty for me: 2/5. Looked totally winable. I was wrong.
My performance: 1/5. Had a crappy start and couldn´t even oust my super-weak prey, the pre-weenie. Neither could I defend myself against my predator, even though he was severly beaten by the !Salubri.
The other players: I am very impressed with Franck here, taking the sweep with a !Salubri bruiser. He didn´t listen to Noberts or Remeks rather highpitched tabletalk at all, and made a lot of good decisions in tricky situations. He got to the finals in this tornament.
Lesson to learn: None really. I could not do much.

Franck: 5 vp

This tournament was won by Matti Palomäki playing a White Lily rush deck. I have no idea how that happened, as I didn´t see much of the finals, but I think there was three combat decks in it. Weird.

Mission accomplished - I qualified for EC day 1. Stay tuned for more about that.
