Ashur´s War Journal – August 2017

This is a special edition Ashur´s War Journal just to inform you how bad my draft at Ropecon went. The main tournament was better - I got to the final with Ventrue princes with sticks with 1 gw 6 vp. To bad I had to hunt Tiago Brum playing the same crypt as me, and he created that deck concept back in 2009, so you can imagine the result. Very competitive decks and players. You can watch that game in it´s entirety at Youtube. (My tabletalk wasn´t the best in that game, but at least it wasn´t the worst at the table!)

But the fun part of the Ropecon weekend was of course the draft. It´s been a while since I drafted real boosters, we instead have built draft cubes for drafting V:TES, because it´s good to have boosters available for newbies. Anyway, I appreciate this opportunity to do the real thing.

The boosters was 5 Third Edition, 1 Black Hand and 1 Sword of Caine. I guess my not so innovative base idea is get some stealth and some bleed, if I don´t bump into something extremely exciting early on that changes that plan. Nosferatu Antitribu and Brujah Antitribu is also always interesting when drafting these sets, being the clans with Nosferatu Kingdom and Gang Territory = permanent pool gain.

I ended up with this library:

As you see, I got double Elysian Fields. The first one was first pick in the first booster, so it decided to focus on Lasombra from start. Sadly, I didn´t find a lot of dominate bleed cards, but ...

... I drafted two (actually three) Virgine, Prodigy, who can increase every bleed by one by buring 1 blood. Naively, I thought that would be enough to do some easy ousting, especially if I also happen to smack that Capitalist on her.

The random Tzimisce is not in there for his looks, but for his permanent +1 stealth on all actions. I actually managed to equip him with Local 1111 to fuel Virgine in the first game. That was fun, but not fun enough.

Key defense is Rumour Mill, 2x Darkness Within, 2x Guard Dogs and 2x Touch of Pain. Nothing too fantastic. A single Redirection would have been nice.

The preliminaries was just two rounds, not three, and no easy ousting was done by me. I managed to get 1,5 vp totally in those two games. Rather tragic.

But at least fellow Swede Kim Nilsson won the tournament. She played a strange wallish auspex-celerity brew which I don´t understand. But if it works - it works!

Draft is always great fun. Actually often enjoy it more than constructed games, because of the non-predictability. Thanks to the organizers and thanks for Ropecon generally - a great event.

Feel free to comment below.

Ashur´s Gothcon experience 2016: The ECQ

Swedish ECQ 2016
Gothcon, Gothenburg, Sweden
March 26, 2016
3 rounds + final
16 players

Pre-game considerations: As I have been rather successful the last year (won ECQ, won Nationals, played EC day 2) I opted one of the decks that have worked for me in those tournaments. For once I had also played a couple of those decks fairly much in the last couple of months, namely my Lasombra/Kiasyd stealth-bleeder and my (well, actually Hugh Anseesings) Ventrue princes with sticks. The Lasombra deck is a simple and super aggressive deck that won me the Nationals, and the Ventrue deck is a deck I´ve played various versions of since september 2011. The variant I´ve used this winter is very much like the one Hugh Anseesing wonEC 2013 with, I only changed a couple of master cards or so.

In the morning I decided that the Lasombra deck felt a bit too boring and obvious, although it´s very effective. So I choose the Ventrue deck. But when I arrived at the venue I noticed that I forgot my Ventrue crypt at the hotel! So I had to go for the Lasombra deck, which I had with me, complete with crypt :(

As some of you might notice, the only difference between this and the Nationals deck is that it has 2 fewer Govern the Unaligned, but 2 more Nocturns. This is because I´ve tried to play it with more Nocturns in our weekly Stockholm GregerAnderssen Memorial league games (because people tend to play more rush-combat in any non-tournament games), and I realized that it ain´t so bad even in tournaments. But I´m still not sure. I see the “Blockturn” deck as a somewhat different archetype (with multiple Unmaskings, possibly FBI, etc) – the main reasons for the Nocturns here is not to block various actions, but to block just some key rushes and to get a less predictable bleed delivery.

16 happy players attended, including one Brit, one German and one Portuguese. Don´t know what happened in Finland nor Denmark, but I hope those players get back to the game soon. Otherwise the usual suspects, plus some Skåne players and Mathias all the way from Umeå – thanks for turning up!

As always I´ll illustrate the tables with these fancy pictures. The colours are red = aggressive, orange = semi-aggressive, yellow = not aggressive at all.

Round 1

Difficulty for me:
4/5. Kim´s deck is a solid wall – it´s really sad the Design Team ignored all warnings about Guardian Vigils brokenness. It´s way too strong, all good players I´ve discussed it with have suggested the for-effect should have been either protein or a much weaker effect. While my deck has some wall-breaker tech, it hasn´t enough defense to survive Hugh´s persistent stealth-bleeding. One other problem is my decks high profile. Kim could handle my bleeds, even when she got crippled by Fredrik, who of course knew I was a bigger threat than Kim. I guess maybe he just let me die.

My performance: 2/5. I really failed in the table talk. Hugh of course talks all the time, and influenced Fredrik to allow him to have 3 minions, which meant doom for me. My only response to Hugh´s excellent table talk would be “Never listen to that man!”, and that just don´t work.
The other players: I don´t think I´ve played against Fredrik before, and he had a deck that´s very difficult to win with, but apart from that he allowed Hugh to oust me (which I think was a mistake even not considering my self-interest!) I think he played good. I had to leave the table to do something else when I was ousted, so I didn´t see the whole game, but I heard it continued rather long, with Kim saving Hugh from being ousted and Hugh eventually doing the sweep.
Lesson to learn: Learn better table talk. Play less threatening decks.

Hugh 4 vp

Round 2

Difficulty for me:
2/5. Sitting between two decks with no intercept is extremely good for me, and I Govern out 5 vamps with no trouble. But Stefan play a lot of bleed-bounce and Faerie Wards which stunts any decent launch attempts from my side, and Mathias circumvents my own (not very plentiful) bounce with nasty Revelation of Ecstasy and Enticement (damn that Mokole Blood!), so I problems both ousting and staying alive myself.
My performance: 4/5. Carlos puts the first Nakhthorheb to torpor and I sacrifice Lucy Markowitz to diablerize him, totally worth burning her. I´m forced to play Pentex backwards on Mathias to stay in the game, and Carlos ousts Mathias with some bounced bleeds from me and Stefan. I oust Stefan and draws into even more strong bleed cards, so I manage to oust Carlos with a well-timed 7-bleed from Virgine (Command of the Beast, Leverage, Foreshadowing Destruction and her special). Good work and a bit of luck.
The other players: All played good. Mathias played a extreme all-or-nothing “glass canon” deck. Stefan ran a fairly original Marconius-based bigcap obtenebration stealth-bleeder, with titled vamps mainly for vote defense. Carlos ran a 90 card-ish Tzimisce wall with some political actions that maybe need some tuning – but he got to the final, so what should I say about tuning?
Lesson to learn: None really. A fairly straightforward game, not a lot of surprises.

Carlos 1 vp
Me 3 vp

Round 3

Difficulty for me:
4/5. Even though I have 4 Seduction and 3 Pentex, I have real problems with a dedicated wall deck, such as Rudolfs. I got really annoyed with getting that seating, had rather bad draw and made some bad decisions.
My performance: 1/5. Primarily I failed in my table talk again. In a critical situation, Jacob was choosing if his Nergal should play his first Barrenness on Rudolfs Heart of Nizchetus-equipped Anarch Convert or on Daniels Saulot, and I somehow forgot to promise him to remove the (for the moment contested) Pentex on Nergal. So he played the Barrenness forward instead of backward, drastically improving Rudolfs hand optimization and at the same time making it impossible for Daniel to ever play Neutral Guard affecting Goratrix. Very bad of me. I also wasted a Pentex and 3 of my Seductions in an early totally failed launch at Rudolf, so I pretty much gave up and let Daniel oust me.
The other players: Apart from the incident mentioned above I was annoyed by all the other players :) Jacob played a bit too sloppy, Daniels deck is too reckless and Rudolf did some strange mind games on me. But that is part of the game!
Lesson to learn: Never give up early. Sit it out even when next to a wall that is so fucking boring a deck can ever be. Shit might change things, you might get lucky.

Daniel 1 vp
Jacob 1 vp
Rudolf 2 vp

Final

Randy was top seed, Rudolf second seed.

I watched almost the whole final, and it was fairly entertaining. Randys deck is really vulnerable, and after he took a couple of bounced big bleeds he was out. Carlos got Eternal Vigilance on Lambach and got a bit to cocky with Eagles Sight-blocking stuff (if I recall correctly), so he was ousted by Hughs persistent bleeding. The rest got really interesting, although I actually missed the last minutes.

Carlos 1 vp
Kari 1 vp
Hugh 3 vp and tournament victory, congrats!

Hugh´s tournament winning deck.

Friends of the German language can read Rudolfs tournament report here.

In conclusion: I was a bit disappointed with myself not having the mental stamina to sit out that last game besides Goratrix, but sometimes it´s just not worth the suffering. I have almost zero understanding for players that choose to play wall decks and similar attrition-based deck concepts, which actually is all about watching other players not having fun for two hours. BUT I also know it´s established archetypes and a part of the game, so I should really just shut up and adapt.

I´ll guess I´ll be back next ECQ, that will be my 17th Gothcon or something like that, possibly my 14th in a row. Hopefully we will have the game back in print by then! See you there!

Fun right?! 12 players turned up. 8 boosters were drafted in one large draft pod. 8 crypt cards, 40 library cards, no recursion. No group restrictions.

I got a Conditioning in the first of the eight packs we drafted, so I stuck to that plan and drafted a horrible pile of Giovanni crapness. Basically just some bleed cards, some stealth and the rest just random stuff to fill out.

The deck. Sorry about the poor photo quality!

I won´t bother you with details about the two preliminary rounds. I got zero in the first but managed to win the second one with a bleed with my last cards. So final table:

I got a nice start with Enzo Giovanni Adv and The Mausoleum, Venice, two cards that made voting difficult for my predator. Then came Lupo Giovanni to fuel Enzo. I landed a 6-bleed into Hugh early which crippled him, but he still got 3 vamps and stabelized at about 5 pool. I was pretty sure I was not going to oust him, but after Mathias was ousted, Randy asked my permission to oust both Hugh and Isak with two political actions. Little did Randy know that my hand was something like “Computer Hacking – Computer Hacking – Foreshadowing Destruction – Conditioning – Call of the Hungry Dead – Call of the Hungry Dead –  Seduction”. So I said “Sure, go ahead!”. Randy ousted Hugh and Isak, and I ousted Randy. Thanks!

When I checked my deck someone noticed I only had 7 vampires in my crypt. I had not noticed the size 8 rule, and I think all previous drafts I´ve played had a 7-crypt rule. But judge Isak let this slip, it wasn´t much to do if he didn´t want to eject me. I hope this unintentional cheating didn´t make a big difference - I know I drafted a second Vittorio which I should have played if I knew the rule.

Anyhow: I love limited play. The game gets really tense and some really surprising cards turn up. I have a draft cube myself, we have to find time to use it more often. Thanks to all those who turned up to play. Good luck next year!

Ashur´s Swedish Nationals 2015 experience

Orig art Peter Bergting
Swedish Nationals 2015
Stockholm, Sweden
November 7, 2015
3 rounds + final
14 players

Pre-game considerations: As usual, tournaments don´t seem to happen when I´m ready for them. I seldom have a deck ready which I have played a lot immediately prior to the date, but that is probably just because I generally don´t like to play the same deck a lot – I always have 5-10 playable decks, and I like to tear down one and build one new each week or so. So: Not ready.

On the other hand I felt motivated before the tournament, because Swedish company Paradox just bought White Wolf, and they seem generally positive to see VTES back in print in some way.

These mixed emotions led me to think that I had to choose a simple deck, and those of you who read my earlier reports say: “He always does.” That might be true, because of the “never ready”-thing above, but I tend to play a lot of toolboxes and vote decks when I play casual, but when it´s tournament time I often feel I need something really simple.

The group 4-5 Kiasyd or Kiasyd/Lasombra haven´t been overly popular in Sweden the last year, so I thought that might work – a couple of years ago it would have been impossible, because of the crypts popularity. But I really didn´t have time to build something from scratch and playtest it, so I stole Alexanders “Don´t stop me now”, a TWD from a glöggturnering in Gothenburg 2012, a really small, tight deck with lots of anger in it. I really like it as is, but I also enjoy more superior discipline-use, so I built a much older crypt. A bit slower deck, but more efficient in using the cards at superior.

I also switched the Song of Pan for a 15:th Govern the Unaligned – I understand the greatness of Song of Pan, but I think it´s better if you run a bit more Kiasyds.

Also, I could not find/do not own a fourth Shroud of Absence, so I played with a Shroud of Night instead – risky, but it worked :)

I played the deck twice the week before the tournament and noticed it still worked. As a last minute crazyness I switched 2 Information Highway for 2 extra Pentex Subversion. The Highways is of course nice with my larger crypt, but on the other hand: Pentex is stupid good, almost always. It saves you from Enkidu and cracks Carna + Bowl, what more can you ask from a card?

The No 1 pyssling.

I´ll illustrate the games with pictures. The colours are red = aggressive, orange = semi-aggressive, yellow = not aggressive at all. Note that this illustrates the decks general “emotion” – it sometimes fizzles :)

Round 1

Difficulty for me: 3/5. I rather quickly noticed that I had a true chance at this table – a very aggressive table, with no real “bearded walls”, just a few speedbumps.
My performance: 3/5. I don´t feel I did any serious mistakes, it just didn´t end with a game win.
The other players: Daniels deck was obviously too weak for this table, I ousted him with a bounced 7-bleed from Kalle. Andreas didn´t get a crypt acceleration card on his first hand, so he couldn´t catch up with the tempo. Randy managed to survive one or two extra turns because he draw into a grotesque amount of Art Scams, but his weird Dragon Breath Rounds-module should have been either extra bounces or extra bleed, I think.

Lesson to learn: This game can be very fast, so be fast. Bounces are good.

Me: 2 vp
Kalle: 3 vp

Table 2

Difficulty for me: 2/5. Both Kristofers and Randals decks are quite slow, so unless they can convince Ober to rush me early, I think this table should be easy for me. It turned out I was right.
My performance: 5/5. Wow – it wasn´t really me, it was the deck. Almost every single card turned up at the best possible time. I couldn´t have a better draw, it was like I´d stacked the deck. For example, I have only 3 Nocturns in the deck, and I had one in play every turn when Ober needed to be blocked (non-stealth rushes, removing my Pentex from Lorrie).

The other players: They might have been able to stop me if they cooperated even more, in some strange deal. Ober put both of Randys minions into torpor (one with Fame) early – maybe those rushes should have been on me after some dealing. But on the other hand Randys deck might be hard to stop for Ober later.
Lesson to learn: Nocturn is very nice against important no-stealth actions.

Me: 4 vp

Table 3

Difficulty for me: 4/5. Eriks !Gangrels are kind of specialized on surviving stealth-bleed (kits Abbott + Marked Territory on ALL vamps, fast, plus various Sportbikes and Under Siege) and after that was Kari with both Abbotts and Under Siege AND Oppugnant Night.
My performance: 3/5. I managed to oust Erik after all, but after that it was over.
The other players: Obers combat was trumphed by Karis (he hit hard and played some fortitude, but not enough against Karis Preternatural Strenght + Octopod + fortitude + Taste of Vitae + Slake the Thirst), so there was lots of dealing. Kari gave Ober opportunity to damage Kim some, which helped me. Once again I found myself in the strange “If I just shut up maybe they will fail to make the right deals to stop me”-situation, and Kim gave me some turns to try to damage Kari, but I ran out of stealth.
Lesson to learn: None really. Shit happens. It´s brave to play combat decks at Nationals, trying to balance tables, so kudos to Kari and Ober.

Final round

Standings after three rounds of play was:
Peter 2 gamewins, 7 victory points
Henrik 1 gamewin, 7 victory points
Erik 1 gamewin, 6 victory points
Kalle 1 gamewin, 3 victory points
Kim 1 gamewin, 3 victory points

Actually there was a coinflip situation between Kim and another great player, Jens (Ropecon champion this year), but he chose to drop before the flip and let Kim play. I was SO VERY happy with this, because he played a Toreador Ira Rivers gun-wall deck, similar to the one Brian Moritz won this years NAC Day 2 with. I would have serious troubles with ousting that deck.

Also, I was very happy that last years Swedish champion Michael H didn´t reach the final, because he played a very similar Kiasyd/Lasombra crypt. Contesting is never fun.

Final table (mucho aggressive!):
Kalle (Tremere sb) > Erik (!Gangrel toolbox) > Peter (Bigcap setite sb) > Kim (Daughters vote w Arishat) > Henrik (Kiasyd/Lasombra sb)

Difficulty for me: 3/5. I bled into the only deck that had bounce, and people wondered why I chose that seat. Well, I´ll try to explain: I did not want to bleed into Erik again, because I think I had luck when I ousted him in turn 3. He pretty quickly gets 3 intercept on his vamps (Abbot + Marked Territory), and while I have lots of Pentexes, I don´t pack enough stealth. And I didn´t want to have Kalle in my back because he is very aggressive and I don´t pack crazy amounts of bounce. Also, I didn´t want to bleed into Kim, because she play Unleash Hell´s Fury. So I choose to bleed into Kalle, because he can be unlucky with his bounces and doesn´t block a lot, tohave Kim as predator – she can be aggressive, but also spend a lot of actions on pool gain and such stuff, and she can´t block my Govern down.
My performance: 3/5. I did not draw any of my 15 Governs in my first 10-15 cards, so my tempos was slow. And after that I didn´t do a lot of supersmart things, I just bled, Governed and kept my mouth shut.
The other players: Kalle played very recklessly and had some bad luck. Kim´s votes caused a lot of discussion and, I think, some strange deals and strange decisions from both Erik and Peter. I won some on some of those deals, to my surprise.
Lesson to learn: Shut up and play your game – words of wisdom with this kind of deck, as always!

Result: Me 5 vp

In conclusion: It´s sad that we can only muster 14 players for a Nationals deals days, but on the other hand those players are very dedicated and nice. Hopefully Paradox will agree to revive the game in some way until next time, so we can attract some new talent. As for my performance: I chose the simplest of decks and just did my thing. It worked out and I´m happy!
