Note: Players can play more than one game each round if their participation are needed to complete a table where at least one player has not yet played a league game this round, but only the best result each round counts for rating. If more players than 5 want to play such a table, lowest vp-count this round has priority. No league game begin before 17.00 or starts after 20.00.)

The next round of the league is played at Dragon´s Lair, Kungsholmstorg 8 next Wednesday about 1800-ish. Be there!

Current tier 1 decks?

What are the tier 1 decks right now? By tier 1 I mean the best tournament level decks. Me, Randyman and Myrdin discussed this recently, and could agree on these:

We might have forgotten some decks though. Feel free to comment, below or on VEKN.net!

Note: Our discussion took place before the banning of Anthelios, which crippled the Girls-archetype. It might still be a playable deck though, but is it tier 1?

Ashur´s Gothcon experience 2016: The ECQ

Swedish ECQ 2016
Gothcon, Gothenburg, Sweden
March 26, 2016
3 rounds + final
16 players

Pre-game considerations: As I have been rather successful the last year (won ECQ, won Nationals, played EC day 2) I opted one of the decks that have worked for me in those tournaments. For once I had also played a couple of those decks fairly much in the last couple of months, namely my Lasombra/Kiasyd stealth-bleeder and my (well, actually Hugh Anseesings) Ventrue princes with sticks. The Lasombra deck is a simple and super aggressive deck that won me the Nationals, and the Ventrue deck is a deck I´ve played various versions of since september 2011. The variant I´ve used this winter is very much like the one Hugh Anseesing wonEC 2013 with, I only changed a couple of master cards or so.

In the morning I decided that the Lasombra deck felt a bit too boring and obvious, although it´s very effective. So I choose the Ventrue deck. But when I arrived at the venue I noticed that I forgot my Ventrue crypt at the hotel! So I had to go for the Lasombra deck, which I had with me, complete with crypt :(

As some of you might notice, the only difference between this and the Nationals deck is that it has 2 fewer Govern the Unaligned, but 2 more Nocturns. This is because I´ve tried to play it with more Nocturns in our weekly Stockholm GregerAnderssen Memorial league games (because people tend to play more rush-combat in any non-tournament games), and I realized that it ain´t so bad even in tournaments. But I´m still not sure. I see the “Blockturn” deck as a somewhat different archetype (with multiple Unmaskings, possibly FBI, etc) – the main reasons for the Nocturns here is not to block various actions, but to block just some key rushes and to get a less predictable bleed delivery.

16 happy players attended, including one Brit, one German and one Portuguese. Don´t know what happened in Finland nor Denmark, but I hope those players get back to the game soon. Otherwise the usual suspects, plus some Skåne players and Mathias all the way from Umeå – thanks for turning up!

As always I´ll illustrate the tables with these fancy pictures. The colours are red = aggressive, orange = semi-aggressive, yellow = not aggressive at all.

Round 1

Difficulty for me:
4/5. Kim´s deck is a solid wall – it´s really sad the Design Team ignored all warnings about Guardian Vigils brokenness. It´s way too strong, all good players I´ve discussed it with have suggested the for-effect should have been either protein or a much weaker effect. While my deck has some wall-breaker tech, it hasn´t enough defense to survive Hugh´s persistent stealth-bleeding. One other problem is my decks high profile. Kim could handle my bleeds, even when she got crippled by Fredrik, who of course knew I was a bigger threat than Kim. I guess maybe he just let me die.

My performance: 2/5. I really failed in the table talk. Hugh of course talks all the time, and influenced Fredrik to allow him to have 3 minions, which meant doom for me. My only response to Hugh´s excellent table talk would be “Never listen to that man!”, and that just don´t work.
The other players: I don´t think I´ve played against Fredrik before, and he had a deck that´s very difficult to win with, but apart from that he allowed Hugh to oust me (which I think was a mistake even not considering my self-interest!) I think he played good. I had to leave the table to do something else when I was ousted, so I didn´t see the whole game, but I heard it continued rather long, with Kim saving Hugh from being ousted and Hugh eventually doing the sweep.
Lesson to learn: Learn better table talk. Play less threatening decks.

Hugh 4 vp

Round 2

Difficulty for me:
2/5. Sitting between two decks with no intercept is extremely good for me, and I Govern out 5 vamps with no trouble. But Stefan play a lot of bleed-bounce and Faerie Wards which stunts any decent launch attempts from my side, and Mathias circumvents my own (not very plentiful) bounce with nasty Revelation of Ecstasy and Enticement (damn that Mokole Blood!), so I problems both ousting and staying alive myself.
My performance: 4/5. Carlos puts the first Nakhthorheb to torpor and I sacrifice Lucy Markowitz to diablerize him, totally worth burning her. I´m forced to play Pentex backwards on Mathias to stay in the game, and Carlos ousts Mathias with some bounced bleeds from me and Stefan. I oust Stefan and draws into even more strong bleed cards, so I manage to oust Carlos with a well-timed 7-bleed from Virgine (Command of the Beast, Leverage, Foreshadowing Destruction and her special). Good work and a bit of luck.
The other players: All played good. Mathias played a extreme all-or-nothing “glass canon” deck. Stefan ran a fairly original Marconius-based bigcap obtenebration stealth-bleeder, with titled vamps mainly for vote defense. Carlos ran a 90 card-ish Tzimisce wall with some political actions that maybe need some tuning – but he got to the final, so what should I say about tuning?
Lesson to learn: None really. A fairly straightforward game, not a lot of surprises.

Carlos 1 vp
Me 3 vp

Round 3

Difficulty for me:
4/5. Even though I have 4 Seduction and 3 Pentex, I have real problems with a dedicated wall deck, such as Rudolfs. I got really annoyed with getting that seating, had rather bad draw and made some bad decisions.
My performance: 1/5. Primarily I failed in my table talk again. In a critical situation, Jacob was choosing if his Nergal should play his first Barrenness on Rudolfs Heart of Nizchetus-equipped Anarch Convert or on Daniels Saulot, and I somehow forgot to promise him to remove the (for the moment contested) Pentex on Nergal. So he played the Barrenness forward instead of backward, drastically improving Rudolfs hand optimization and at the same time making it impossible for Daniel to ever play Neutral Guard affecting Goratrix. Very bad of me. I also wasted a Pentex and 3 of my Seductions in an early totally failed launch at Rudolf, so I pretty much gave up and let Daniel oust me.
The other players: Apart from the incident mentioned above I was annoyed by all the other players :) Jacob played a bit too sloppy, Daniels deck is too reckless and Rudolf did some strange mind games on me. But that is part of the game!
Lesson to learn: Never give up early. Sit it out even when next to a wall that is so fucking boring a deck can ever be. Shit might change things, you might get lucky.

Daniel 1 vp
Jacob 1 vp
Rudolf 2 vp

Final

Randy was top seed, Rudolf second seed.

I watched almost the whole final, and it was fairly entertaining. Randys deck is really vulnerable, and after he took a couple of bounced big bleeds he was out. Carlos got Eternal Vigilance on Lambach and got a bit to cocky with Eagles Sight-blocking stuff (if I recall correctly), so he was ousted by Hughs persistent bleeding. The rest got really interesting, although I actually missed the last minutes.

Carlos 1 vp
Kari 1 vp
Hugh 3 vp and tournament victory, congrats!

Hugh´s tournament winning deck.

Friends of the German language can read Rudolfs tournament report here.

In conclusion: I was a bit disappointed with myself not having the mental stamina to sit out that last game besides Goratrix, but sometimes it´s just not worth the suffering. I have almost zero understanding for players that choose to play wall decks and similar attrition-based deck concepts, which actually is all about watching other players not having fun for two hours. BUT I also know it´s established archetypes and a part of the game, so I should really just shut up and adapt.

I´ll guess I´ll be back next ECQ, that will be my 17th Gothcon or something like that, possibly my 14th in a row. Hopefully we will have the game back in print by then! See you there!

Ashur´s Gothcon experience 2015

Hi. This is a short report from the Swedish ECQ 2015, as usual held at the Gothcon gaming convention in Gothenburg.
I was kind of out of shape before this tournament, my first this year. I promised to play more after my nice 11th place at the EC 2014, but stuff has held me from it, for example a 10 week long course weeknights. Also I haven´t felt inspired by the Unaligned and Storyline sets – lots of boring cards that haven´t made me feel for building new decks.
So I had no clear idea of what deck to pick for Gothcon. I settled for something that I´m used to, some kind of grinder or lawfirm. But I didn´t want to play my old Princes with sticks (which I reached the final at the Swedish Nationals 2011), or the G4-5 “bleedfirm” I won a small tournament with in late 2013.
But I felt stressed and couldn´t bother to think a lot, so I just search secretlibrary.info for decks with Lodin, and found David Duráns TWD from Camarilla Conclave 2014. I switched some cards – 2 Vessel for 2 Villein, 4 Public Trust for Governs, 1 Parity Shift for 1 Anarchist Uprising, 1 Foreshadowing for 1 Conditioning, 2 Redirection for 2 Deflectioning, 2 WWEF for 2 Second Traditions, 4 Taste of Vitae for 2 Soak and 2 Weighted Walking Stick, and Joseph D for an extra Mustafa.
These alternations can be discussed, and I realise that there are still much room for improvement in the deck, but … the rest is history :)

Table 1:

Red arrow: Aggressive
Orange arrow: Semi-aggressive
Yellow arrow: Not aggressive

Difficulty for me: 3/5. Tap n bleed is not nice to have as predator, but I run a lot of wakes so things could be far worse. Also having the other deck with lots of votes as my table ally is always better than playing against it.
My performance: 2/5. I handled Rudolf, and put Oskars Blackhorse to torpor with Graham Gottesman in a stick vs stick fight. But I could bleed Oskar hard because of his bleed bounce.
I did a really stupid decision when I was heads up when I guessed Oskar had a Daring the Dawn in his hand and that it didn´t really matter how I played. Turns out Oskar don´t even play Daring, and I would have won the game have I only not tapped out.
The other players: Rudolf really wanted Marko to disappeared, and played Pentex Subversion on his first vamp, Anson. Oskar then put Revelations at superior on Marko as his first action, forcing him to play with an open hand. When Marko finally got rid of the Pentex, Rudolf contested his Anson = bye bye Marko. Oskars Revelation stayed in play for the whole game, giving him a great advantage against his preys. More about Oskars deck in the finals.
Lesson to learn: Knowledge of deck archetypes is good, but don’t have too much bias about other peoples decks.

Oskar: 4 vp

Table 2:

Difficulty for me: 2/5. My predator is a Tzimisce wall, but without many Eagles Sights or bleed cards to do the old “prey punisher” routine. My first prey is odd, but not impossible to handle.
My performance: 4/5. I played this extremely slow, almost being ousted by Fredriks John Paleologus-thing (“During your untap phase, if John is ready, he may burn 2 blood to cause your prey to burn 1 pool.”) – he had me down at 4 pool once! Heads up I think Ivan made a mistake allowing me to cycle cards by a block when he didn´t need to, so I could draw the bleed card I needed to oust him just in time.
The other players: Bea had a funny deck, with 2-cap Sabbat vamps with Desert Eagles+Magazines+Scatter shot, backed with Hungry Coyote and Blood Dolls. She dashed out a lot of damage to my vamps, but my fortitude saved me. A funny deck, but not so funny if Scourge of the Enochians hit the table! She played well, but could survive in the long run.
Fredriks deck was WAY to slow, and played a very strange and expensive combat module with Body Arsenal and Blood of Acid. Cheaper combat (say Aid + Crows) and more wakes and bleed bounce would have served him well.
Ivan (Myrdin when he writes at Stockholmjyhad) is one of the best players I know, at least when it comes to deck building and counting and such stuff, but here he had problems. He used Mirror Walks to escape Fredriks combat, but couldn´t really handle being rush with Scatter shots. And he had Selena burned by Beas Archon Investigation when he was bounced.
Lesson to learn: It´s nice to have a calm predator. Always make the best of it.

Ivan: 1 vp
Me: 3 vp

Table 3:

Difficulty for me: 1/5. A very, very good seating, with a first prey that had problems defending her pool without drawing a Protected Resources, while damaging her own prey a lot. Isak is aggressive, but I can bounce his bleeds.
My performance: 4/5. Well, what can I say. I didn´t mess this up, I just took care of what was given to me.
The other players: Everybody did their thing, including Isak bleeding me with 1-stealthed 6-bleeds that I could bounce to Caroline, so I ousted her fast. Sure, doing so is a kind of kingmaking, but on the other hand not bleeding is also so. Kalle was really close to ousting Isak with big bleeds and cancelling the bleed bounce with several Touch of Clarity. I had to blow up the table with a Anarchist Uprising to be really sure to secure the game win.
Lesson to learn: None really. It just fell into my lap.

Final:

1. Marko
2. Hugh
3. Randy
4. Henrik
5. Oskar

Difficulty for me: 4/5. This table was top notch, with the top ranked players of Sweden, Finland and the UK, and me only third seed, so I had to get more points than both Hugh and Marko to win. My deck should be able to stop Hughs and Randys.
My performance: 4/5. Everybody told me I played well afterwards, so I guess I did. I applied a kind of strange tactic – I knew Randal and Hugh was going to talk A LOT, so I decided to quite randomly only listed to about every other “advice” they gave me. I also decided to mess Hugh up quite hard, blocking and damaging his minions a lot in the beginning, just because I knew he is a good player. And I wanted Randy to damage Marko just about enough so he couldn´t have a chance to oust Oskar.
The other players: Randy was very frustrated with his situation, me blocking his first Embrace and not permitting him to put Marko within ousting range.
Marko did his best moving pool with Parity Shifts, me voting with him just enough to make him survive but not ousting Oskar (Mustafa the Heir was very nice here, asking for blood to vote with him, but by doing so stealing a blood from one of his vamps).
Hugh was gone quite early to Oskars heavy bleed. Very heavy bleed! I have to give Oskar real strong cred for his deck – not until after the tournament, facing him twice, I realised the deck a powerbleeder disguised as a stickmen grinder. Every stickmen player can be “unlucky”, and just draw some stupid bleed cards and almost no stick or prevent, so it´s not that easy to unveil the deceit. I heard he played only 2 Weighted Walking Stick and 2 prevent cards!
Lesson to learn: This game is tricky. It´s not enough to know your own deck, recognize the other decks, read the table correctly and make the right decisions based on all that, you also profit by knowing the other players, and knowing when to follow their advice and when not to.

Randyman: 1 vp
Oskar: 1,5 vp
Me: 1,5 vp (game win and tournament victory)

All the final decks can be found here.

Conclusion: I have played this tournament every year for 15 years or so, and now it was my turn to get lucky. I guess the tree don´t fall on the first cut, right?
I want to thank Isak for arranging the tournament, as well as the very nice draft the day before and the gathering at his home the night before that (when Rudolf thought Montano-Baltimore Purge was suitable for a casual game!)
Thanks also to the other 16 players who bothered to attend. Hope seeing you again soon, in Warsaw or before that!
I sincerely hope this game will be rekindled within shortly, as some rumours tell me. I get the feeling that we are “playing in the end times” right now, and that it´s critical to get things done now, if we want new players to discover the game and old players to return. I wish those responsible for this the very best of luck.

The aftermath...

Erik has written about his RopeCon experience!
I am home from Ropecon and it has been a great trip! Thanks to the swedes and fins making the trip and the competition awesome. Special big up to our gracious host with the amazing comic book collection who let us stay there. I’ll definately be going next year too.
So here’s a few thoughts of the V:TES experience. I picked the deck I’ve had most success with and played the most in the Stockholm league. It’s pretty much a standard dom/tha bleed deck with a few added allies and Grooming the Protege. I managed to win the second round table barely. I got into heads-up with a kiasyd bleed deck and it could really have gone either way. That win plus one vp from the first table got me into 18th place which gave me a t-shirt. Awesome!
I must say that I was pretty nervous having to play while speaking english. Specially when I was playing two tables as the only swede but I quickly got relaxed because the finnish people were really kind. There were hardly any missunderstandings due to language as far as I remember.
I saw a lot of interesting decks but I was a bit surprised by the lack of rush combat. I saw a few such decks but I thought there would be more. There were a lot of famous archetypes with funny quirks which made me really happy to see. Finland has really good players even though some may not play as often as our group in Stockholm.
All in all a great trip with V:tes, sauna, beer and amazing company. Ropecon was a great way for me to play outside of Stockholm for the first time and I can really recommend it. The cosplayers was cool to watch as well.
See you at the EC!!!

It´s all about Pentex

Hi, it´s me again Ashur, Stockholm methuselah, mediocre but with great heart and commitment to the game. I was at the swedish ECQ in Gothenburg this weekend. This is my version of what happened.

Pre-game considerations:
My goals of the tournament was modest: 1) Recoup from my traumatic experience at the draft the day before (when I had both my 8-cap and my 7-cap burned in the same turn!) and 2) qualifying for the EC in Stockholm in October.

As usual I want to play a crappy deck to be able to boast about winning with it afterwards. I was choosing between a Vignes-style powerbleed deck or a Randers-style Kiasyd Earth Swords wallish toolbox (like this, but 80 cards). I also didn´t want to be ridiculed by War Ghouls or Infernal Anson-guns (stuff like this), so I picked the Kiasyds.

Game 1:
So, we meet again Mr Infernal Anson! But this time I equip my first vamp with Ivory Bow and my predator has to rush backwards. But Guillaume gets Secure Haven, play Pentex and ousts.

My grandprey don´t like the vote deck and plays Pentex backwards AND rushes him. So I oust.

Then we are in a nice triangle with me at 10 pool and my 4 dom-vamps almost at full capacity and the other methuselahs lower on pool and with very thirsty vamps. After some trouble I can leave with the game win when my prey is ousted on his own Dragonbound.

Me 3 vp. Randal 1 vp. Nikolaj 1 vp.

To learn from this game: Not much. It simply went my way.

Game 2:
Gee, Lazvernius! It was a long time since I saw such a dedicted single-vamp wall at a tournament. As I guess he didn´t have rushes nor enough Eagle´s Sight, I prepared for my predator was playing a game without predator – especielly after the Pentex:es started to rain.

But my predator takes out Banjoko and starts bleeding heavily, so I get a worried and decides to save wakes and intercept for him instead of blocking my preys first actions, Mozambique Allure and Embrace. Big, big mistake. I guess I´m not used to the archetype. Soon he gains 10+ pool each turn, and while I can handle my predator (-s), and even hurt my prey with bounces and own bleeds, I can never oust him. He has 16 vamps and over 40 pool when his totally undisturbed prey has eaten his way through Lazvernius and the Lasombras. But I manage to survive and Wash the Week of Nightmares, so time runs out.

Me 0.5 vp, Ralf 0.5 vp, DT 2.5 vp

To learn from this game: Always block the first actions of a clown car deck (and if possible torpor his vamps). No matter the cost.

Game 3:
Nasty table. My predator is quickly ousted by the “Carna is Vignes”-deck after doing 15-ish pool damage on me. Hi is not missed by anyone :)

Lazverius smashes my preys vamps to pulp and manages to remove his preys first backwards-aimed Pentex.

Then I do a mistake. I decide to deal with my predator for a bleed free turn, I put a Pentex cross table on Lazvernius AND I rescure my preys Korah from torpor. My guess is that I cannot oust Lazverius myself. So my prey ousts him, but it takes two turns instead of one, and after some heavy bleed-bouncing I am ousted myself. The Kindred Spirits-guy had only one alternative – full speed ahead with stealthed 3-4 bleeds, and my predator Ober always play a bit more bounce than normal people. I should have taken that into account.

Me 0 vp, Ober 2 vp, Kristoffer 3 vp

To learn from this game: It´s often stupid to overextend. Just picking that 1 vp and not going for more would have qualified me for the EC.

Finals
Oh how I would have loved to play this final. While not optimal and aside from me being a stupid player, I think my deck could have handled everything at this table.

The War Ghoul-players immediately starts contesting two minions and the Maris-variant is ousted fast.

No Ghoul enter play until the strange grinder (Masochism?! Ecstatic Agony?!!) is ousted.

Very tense play at only three players left, but the Ghouls win in the long run. Congrats Daniel!

Marko 1 vp, DT 1 vp, Ober 1 vp, Daniel 2 vp and tournament victory.

Summary
I once again experience that VtES is a game for people that love to lose. Sure, it feels stupid to fail to qualify, but I had a decent time in Gothenburg and have more chances. But one thing that always comes to mind at times like this is that it would have been nice if I was hooked on a game that didn´t take 2 hours to play each round. 1 hour would be nice, so that you got more chances to not have bad seatings, bad draws, weird brainfarts and such randomness. Although the 2 hours is also part of the charm with VtES, the game has it´s drawbacks. Like all games.
