Limit master cards?

I´m sick and tired of the master decks. It´s getting monotonous, boring and way too good. Also, it´s not really in tune with what I perceive as the theme of VTES, with methuselahs influencing minions to do their bidding. Now it´s more like players flipping, fetching and shuffling in a more and more solitaire/MTG-style of game. It´s more and more about drawing the right card (Tablets, Infernal Pursuit etc) instead of make the right decision, for example block/not block.

What about limiting master cards in decks? 20 % maybe?

For example, rounded up, this would be
20 % of 90 cards = 18
20 % of 70 cards = 14

As I see it,
Pros: Less master-focused decks, more minion-focused playing. Very subjective of course, but I think this is more fun.
Cons: Limits deckbuilding. Limits odd masters seeing play. Another reason for deckchecking/penalties in tournaments.

What do you think?

  1. Master decks are strong (and often look the "same"). But I do not like the proposed solution. Just the checking and counting of players decks would be tedious work. I would very much prefer good versatile cards that solves the problem

  2. Or we could ban Ashur Tablets.
    Just saying...

  3. I would say that it is the recursion and the adjustment of the deck ratio later in the game so you can hone your deck after the situation (and loads of poolgain) that give the masterheavy decks their edge. I would personally not want to go into deciding how many of a certain card you are allowed to b´play, but rather just ban both ashur tablets and anthelios.

  4. One of the German players came up with a rather radical (but not unreasonable) approach. Each player can only play two master cards per turn, that is any combination of Trifle and/or regular master cards. So decks relying on the Trifle effect (like Life in the City or Orun, etc.) can play their game, as well decks relying on Parthenon can play their two regular master cards for that matter. But the abuse of playing 3 regular masters plus one trifle is stopped easily. Similar to the rule where you can only play one Event per turn, no matter how many discard phase actions you have.

  6. I've seen the proposal that extrala describes before and prefer it over anything else. However, the rule should be that a player may not use more than 2 master phase actions per turn to account for in play cards like Lilith's Blessing, Powerbase: Rome, et al.
